Students who are seeking MSc projects or other projects are welcome to contact maria.uden@ltu.se regarding the subjects listed below, for further discussions. The level and scope of the different subjects may be adjusted to fit for either individual or group work.
Hotspot
- OpenNet solution.
A student group from KTH started a work to set up HotSpots and opening up an OpenNet environment in Jokkmokk. http://csd.ssvl.kth.se/~csd2004-team18/ The project is still to be completed in terms of putting up firther HotsSpots in the Jokkmokk area, developing the OpenNet solution, developing the Tiki documentation. A mix of hardware, software and business model development tasks: Set up hardware and software; Look into multiple hardware options: rugged devices for outdoor environments, low power units, etc; Enable multiple ISP's Investigate possible ISP's in the Jokkmokk area.
Prophet
- DTN Routing algorithm implementation in Python.
A protocol draft for the PROPHET algorithm will be available January 2005. An implementation of the protocol in Python is of interest to the SNC group. For background see e.g. Lindgren, Doria, Schelén: “Probabilistic Routing in Intermittently Connected Networks”, which is one of the papers you find if you click “Documentation”.
Email registration
software - Implementation (UNIX)
The task is to develop dynamic mapping of users into DTN addresses.
Survey
- work in progress and work done on predictive web caching systems.
Making an advanced survey on work in progress and work done on predictive web caching systems may suit e.g. students who in the future whish to specialize in this field.
User cases: tourism
in Laponia
How would users who either are tourists or work in the tourist industry in the Laponia area make use of the SNC/Internet access? What trails do people walk, what communication needs are prioritized by different users? The task is to develop cases which can be used in evaluating possible solution routes and prepare for testing. What are the technical/economical outcomes for the different cases? Preferably in co-operation with the Laponia project for tourism development (contact will be established via SNC).
Investigation on the
digitalization of the 450MHz net
What is happening – technically, politically, and in terms of commercial initiatives – regarding the digitalization of the 450MHz mobile phone net? What consequences will the digitalization have for the SNC system (e.g. in terms of efficiency), and for the Internet access in Laponia?
Education plan
A goal within SNC is to provide education so that people locally will be able to put up their own SNC HotSpots. The task is to develop an education plan, including further development of the “TikiWiki” database that was earlier developed by the HotSpot Laponia student team http://csd.ssvl.kth.se/~csd2004-team18/. The TikiWiki database shall function as a living document that can be continuously updated. See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page or the Swedish page http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huvudsida.
